Macassar Held to Thrilling Draw in SLB Clash with Kraaifontein

Riverside Park, Macassar – It was a fiercely contested battle at Riverside Park this past weekend as Macassar RFC and Kraaifontein RFC played to a thrilling 26-all draw. Although not the result Macassar had targeted on home soil, they managed three valuable league points, solidifying their position in second place on the Super League B log, with a game in hand over log leaders Goodwood RFC.

Kraaifontein, determined to bounce back after a disappointing home defeat to Primrose RFC a week ago, came out with real intent. Within just 15 minutes, they surged to a 0–14 lead, capitalising on Macassar’s early handling errors and exerting dominance in both territory and possession.

Macassar, however, found their rhythm midway through the first half and quickly turned the momentum. A pair of brilliantly executed converted tries brought the hosts level at 14–14. The first of those was a true showcase of Macassar’s attacking flair — a line break by flyhalf Darren Hendricks, who delivered a pinpoint cross-kick to Breyton Kleyn, the fleet-footed winger who collected a favorable bounce and dotted down near the posts—a textbook example of Macassar’s creative and dynamic backline play.

The game remained tightly balanced with the two sides exchanging leads, but Kraaifontein’s powerful forward pack began to assert itself more in the second half. They pushed their way to a 26–21 lead, applying sustained pressure and earning penalties as they pinned Macassar deep in their half.

However, the resilient Macassar backline once again sparked to life. Just as they did the week before, they launched a counter-attack from their own twenty-two, culminating in Jaden Pieterse finishing off a breathtaking team try. Unfortunately, the difficult touchline conversion attempt missed — a kick that could’ve edged them ahead in the dying minutes.

Despite Kraaifontein’s dominance in the closing stages, their inability to turn repeated penalty opportunities into points proved costly. Macassar’s defense held firm under pressure, and the match concluded with a well-earned 26–26 draw.

Player Highlights:

  • Eduardo Titus and Mark Davids delivered tireless performances in the loose trio, pivotal in both defense and at the breakdown.
  • Nangamso Bukani, tight head prop, stood his ground admirably against a formidable Kraaifontein pack.
  • Cheslyn Cyster made a solid return to the midfield, offering stability and strength in contact situations.

Looking Ahead:

While the draw might feel bittersweet, the coaching staff can take heart from the progress made and the character shown under pressure. The upcoming bye week comes at a crucial time, offering a chance for rest and recovery, particularly for scrumhalf Jovan Cookson, who has featured in five consecutive matches without a break. Finding a reliable rotation option at nine will be a key talking point going into the second half of the campaign.

Next match, Macassar travels to face Hamlets RFC, eager to maintain momentum and continue their charge for top honours in the Super League B.
